Last 11th of November took place the First Sommeliers Meeting Degusta Rioja, organized by Diario La Rioja. This is the first meeting for professionals of wine world and Carlos Echapresto, from Venta Moncalvillo, managed the technical guidance. "This is a meeting made by sommeliers and designed for sommeliers", told, because "we are in traditional wine's land and we had to achieve that commitment, related to it", he said. More than two hundred of experts came to the appointment which included three wine tastings, several conferences with the most important spanish wine experts, a fair with the main Rioja wineries and also a traditional lunch with all products that come from this land, such as potatoes and chorizo stew, "sobado" bread, wild mushrooms, "chamarito" lamb, olive oil, dried prunes, Cameros cheese and some other products cooked by Venta Moncalvillo team.
Some of the most important speakers came to the event. Experts like Juanma Terceño, González Byass sommelier, Javier Gila, president of Asociación Madrileña de Sumilleres, César Cánovas, the responsible of Centro Cultural Monvínic, Juancho Asenjo, trainer and consultant of sommeliers, Manuel Angosto, Celler de Can Roca sommelier, José Antonio Navarrete, Quique Dacosta sommelier, Miguel Ángel Benito, Museo del Vino de Peñafiel sommelier and José Luis Paniagua, head of sommeliers of Atrio Relais and Chateaux.
There were three spectacular wine tastings:
- "Short varieties of Rioja" (tempranillo blanco, maturana tinta, mazuelo, graciano, garnacha...) with Dinastía Vivanco wines.
- "Historical wines of Marqués de Riscal"
- "The best Rioja wines", with the most prestigious wines.
The congress ended with an exciting tribute to Custodio López Zamarra, sommelier of the prestigious restaurant Zalacaín in Madrid. López Zamarra is considered the father of sommeliers in Spain, because his work and publications have contributed to a better development of this job. He represented a big help at the beginning of Venta Moncalvillo, that is the reason for Carlos Echapresto thanking his work: "Custodio López helped Venta Moncalvillo to become in this restaurant".
